The Penn State chapter of ACACIA capped off a yearlong
fundraising effort raising 181,577.79 with their sorority partner Gamma Phi
Beta for the Hershey Medical Center Four Diamonds Fund.
The pairing was part of a record total raising
$10,686,924.83, eclipsing last years total by over $1.1 Million after a trying
year at Penn State University.
THON is a 46-hour dance marathon that aids children of the
Four Diamonds Fund suffering from pediatric cancer. ACACIA has been an active
member throughout THONs 40-year history, and raised the third largest amount
for THON among Greek organizations in 2012.
Four senior members of ACACIA danced for 46 hours straight,
overcoming tough challenges to accomplish a remarkable goal. Former THON chair
Ryan Mead as well as Jared Manley, Jason Burke and Lou Redmond were chosen to
represent ACACIA in THON. Each dancer completed the 46-hour marathon in front
of a record crowd at the Bryce Jordan Center. Members of ACACIA and Gamma Phi
Beta filled the stands as one of the loudest and most visible student sections
in the BJC.
ACACIA broke their previous record despite missing the third
canning weekend of the year. Since joining together with the sisters of Gamma
Phi Beta in 2007, the pairing has raised over $712,000 for the kids.
ACACIA and Gamma Phi Beta are paired with three four
diamonds families; The Jazmine Cope Family, the Jed Smith Family, and the
Breeanna Taylor Smith family. Jed Smith lost his battle with cancer on Jan. 3,
2010. Jazmine Cope also lost her battle at the age of 14 on Nov. 26, 2010. Both
losses suffered have been a constant reminder to both ACACIA and Gamma Phi Beta
of why we THON.
The Four Diamonds Fund and THON help all children suffering
from pediatric cancer with emotional support, financial support and research to
one day cure cancer.
